Heavy Metal Death Can, a Retro Inspired Survival Horror Launches on Steam in 2026

Sweden-based indie development studio, Krufs Productions, today released a brand new trailer announcing their upcoming blood-soaked debut, retro-inspired survival horror extravaganza Heavy Metal Death Can, will be coming to Steam later in 2026.

With fixed camera angles, tank controls, and choice-driven gameplay, Heavy Metal Death Can channels the tense, cinematic style of late ’90s horror, with fresh and modern visuals adding to the foreboding atmosphere. Players must hone their skills to balance ammo, health, and risk in a world where cosy Swedish cultural staples clash with cold industrial brutality and deep sea horror.

ABBA may have been in full swing back in 1970s Sweden, but this face-melting soundtrack is definitely not inspired by the wholesome melodic quartet, instead leaning into heavy guitar, drenched in fuzzy distortion and reverb. All of the kicking, heavy metal music featured in the game was written and performed by Argos Eye, the side project of Toby, one of the members of Krufs Productions. The band is also responsible for some of the game’s unique sounds, which were designed to emulate the chilling sounds of an underwater metal vessel, and created by tapping a guitar with various metal objects. Toby also lent his voice to the game’s sound effects, such as the bone-chilling screams of terrified naval officers.

The game’s main environment, a 1970s Swedish military submarine, was modelled upon a real-life visit to an actual submarine from the era – many of the control panels, rooms and uniforms are closely based on reality.

Features:

  • Old-school terror meets Swedish submarine surrealism in this survival horror in the style of early console classics
  • Fixed camera angles and tank controls (with modern options) lend a haunting atmosphere to the game
  • Uncover a twisting narrative through uneasy alliances and strange encounters
  • A nostalgic visual style inspired by ’90s horror games, enhanced with modern rendering technologies to create a fresh yet familiar horror experience
  • Unique Late 1970s Swedish Naval setting gives you a creepy sense of fauxstalgia for a place in time that never quite was

Heavy Metal Death Can promises to bring death, decay, and distortion to Steam in 2026. Will You Make it Back Home?
